Lighting and composition for portraits

In portrait photography use natural light for portraiture instead of flash, this will prevent red eye and hard shadows. Photograph portraits close up, being careful not to cut out someone's face when taking the portrait photograph. Step back a little and zoom in with your digital camera's zoom feature to make your subject more at ease. Remove unnecessary items from the area around your portrait photograph. Posed shots never look natural for portraits, take as many photographs as possible as you talk to the portrait subject capturing the expressions. Keep backgrounds as simple as possible moving items which may cause distractions in the final portrait. Step away from a walls, don't place your portrait subject directly against a wall.
